Donaghmore

This is the place where St Patrick is said to have founded a religious establishment in the th century.

Standing impressively at the end of the village is the six metres tall cross, dating from the 9th century. It is one of Ulster’s finest Early Christian monuments.

A stone pillar stands in the churchyard to the great Hugh O’Neill, erected by one of his descendants, a professor of Aberdeen University.

The Bardic Theatre Group put on performances and host other events at their theatre space on the edge of the village.

Fivemiletown

In the far southwestern corner of the District is Fivemiletown - the name derives from the town’s location five Irish miles from its nearest neighbours of Clogher, Brookeborough and Tempo.

Its former name was Baile na Lorgan, which means ‘town on the long hilltop ridge’. An important road junction, it was established as a ‘plantation’ town and has grown to a population of 1975. The Clogher Valley Railway used to run up the now shop lined busy main street.

Of the former copper industry nothing survives but it can boast factories and a large modern creamery. Good fishing is available for salmon and trout In the Colebrooke River and Screeby Lough and for perch and rudd in other small local Loughs.

At the Round Lake the visitor may stay at the caravan park, use the visitor centre or simply enjoy the lovely walks around the Lough. The town has active rugby and football clubs and two hotels.
