This busy industrial town is the
centre for engineering and the manufacture of bricks and pipeclay.
The Torrent River, a great source of industrial waterpower,
is also a natural feature whilst the canal basin is an asset
to the area. At Washingbay, not far from Coalisland on the
shores of Lough Neagh, is a nature conservation area - a haven
for wildlife enthusiasts. To the east of the town on the shores
of Lough Neagh are the impressive remains of Mountjoy Castle.
It was once the garrison fort of Lord Charles Mountjoy, established
by him in 1607 for the English troops.
