Tyrone Heritage Trails Move Into A New Era
Friday, 16th January 2009 saw a new dawn for heritage trails in Co. Tyrone. As the tourism body responsible for promoting the region, Flavour of Tyrone, officially launched their heritage trails podcasts with the help of Lord Morrow, the Mayor of Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council. The podcasts, available on www.flavouroftyrone.com, provide a unique insight and narrative into the history of the Torrent Valley Heritage Trail, Dungannon Heritage Trail and Clogher Valley/Carleton Trail and the Clogher Fort archaeological dig -  all within the Co Tyrone region.

Visitors to the site can view highlights of places such as Parkanaur Forest, Donaghmore Cross, Clogher Cathedral and Fort, Dungannon’s fine churches and key views points along the Carleton trail including details of the ancient Clogher Stone, St Patrick’s Chair and Well and the homestead of local poet and novelist, William Carleton - to name but a few. There is also a fascinating podcast providing a unique insight into the archaeological dig at Clogher Fort from 1969-1978 by Dr Richard Warner.  Dr Warner discusses some of the exciting artifacts recovered from the site and their historical significance.

The podcasts can be viewed either on the site or downloaded to your ipod or iTunes for free.  Visitors can also download accompanying brochures.

Cllr Jim Cavanagh, Chairman of Flavour of Tyrone, said:
“We want visitors to our site to be inspired and motivated to come and explore our wonderful heritage trails and we knew that podcasts would help us achieve that aim. Our podcasts not only highlight our heritage gems but provide an insight and narrative into the history behind them.

Cllr Cavanagh further added:
We hope that visitors like what they see and make 2009 the year they discover or rediscover the wealth of history, culture and heritage in the County Tyrone region.”

The project was funded by Blackwater Regional Partnership and Interreg 111 through the Special EU Programmes Body.
